A special edition of The Eel Pilgrimage, accompanied by a Somerset Eel Recovery Project (SERP) pencil, made for drawing, observing, and exploring the extraordinary world of the European eel.

This beautifully illustrated guidebook is much more than a book to read. Throughout its pages are a wide variety of experimental drawing activities that encourage readers to respond creatively to rivers, wetlands, eel habitats, and the living world around them.

Written by Emi Ostler, the book combines reflection, observation, art, and ecology. Inspired by an Eel Pilgrimage Trail on the Somerset Levels, it encourages readers to slow down and experience landscapes through drawing, using different ways of seeing, mark-making, and observation to explore the journeys and transformations of the European eel.

The book features print fragments by award-winning painter-printmaker Julia Manning, drawn from her acclaimed Decline of Eels series. Her artwork sits alongside the activities, reflections and observations, creating a publication that is part guidebook, part artist's workbook and part invitation to explore.

The accompanying SERP pencil makes this edition especially suited to getting involved with the book's drawing activities. Take it outdoors, draw what you notice, experiment with marks and shapes, and use the pages as a starting point for your own creative exploration.
