Coming very soon the launch of our 4 comprehensive Educational packs
The Eel Books: four teaching packs, one extraordinary story
The European eel begins life in the Sargasso Sea, drifts thousands of kilometres to our rivers and rhynes, and returns across the Atlantic to breed. It is also Critically Endangered. The Eel Books bring this remarkable animal into the classroom through four age-matched packs, written by the award-winning Somerset Eel Recovery Project (SERP).
Wriggle, Wriggle, Little Eel (Early Years, ages 3–5) offers a read-aloud story with a repeated refrain, eleven play-based activities, songs and photocopiable sheets for colouring, tracing and counting. Every activity is mapped to the EYFS areas of learning.
The Eel Who Came a Long Way (Key Stage 1, ages 5–7) has seventeen worksheets for first readers and writers. It also includes a word bank, fun facts, quizzes, a word search and a full answer key.
The Eel That Crossed an Ocean (Key Stage 2, ages 7–11) has twenty-two worksheets spanning biology, geography, history, art and science method. It includes a real-world campaign case study, three quizzes, a word search and a crossword.
A Species in Crisis (Key Stage 3, ages 11–14) has fourteen data-led worksheets covering eDNA, barriers, pumps and population decline. It comes with marked quizzes, a 50-word glossary word search and a challenging crossword.
The packs are designed to grow with the child: a pupil who meets the great eel mystery at five meets it again at fourteen, with more depth each time. Every pack includes background notes for teachers, a clear safety statement and photography from SERP's own conservation work. The packs are classroom-based and need no fieldwork. Although rooted in the Somerset Levels, they work anywhere the European eel is found.
These packs are ideal for schools, nurseries, home educators, wildlife trusts and visitor centres. Each one inspires the next generation of conservationists while meeting curriculum needs and will be available very soon.
